Deborah “A Mother in Israel”

“When the princes in Israel take the lead, when the people willingly offer  themselves—
praise the Lord! ~ Judges 5:2

…Villagers in Israel would not fight; they held back until I, Deborah, arose,
until I arose, a mother in Israel. ~ Judges 5:7

Deborah is the only female Judge recorded in Scripture.  She is a prophetess and now a military leader and yet she calls herself a mother.  Deborah chooses to use the title of motherhood to speak about her influence and her calling by God.  She humbly shows us that regardless of title, we influence based on our obedience to God’s call, not by where we hold court.  Most importantly, Deborah leads her nation from the love and devotion of a mother’s heart.

Deborah reminds us of the high calling of belonging to the Family of God, of what being a member of the Body of Christ should truly mean.

Regarding Deborah’s style of leadership Jack Hayford says “Leadership is not a responsibility afforded to only a few, but a privilege given by God to all.  For leading is simply guiding or influencing the way of another.  And Jesus asked every believer to participate in showing others the way to eternal life (Acts 1:8).  So whether it is across the sea or across the street, as a state senator or a team mom, as a corporate executive or a PTA committee member, we have all been given the opportunity to lead and influence others, and to help them find their way to The Way, Jesus Christ.” [Biblical Ministries Through Women, Jack W. Hayford, Thomas Nelson, © 1994, 2012]

Acts 1:8      “But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power.  You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.”

I Peter 2:9  But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

I want to be a Deborah to the people in my life…A Mother in Israel!

It is a costly calling that says Leadership should mirror the demands of Motherhood.

Motherhood is: Leadership, a Fierce Devotion, Discipline and the willingness to be Unpopular, Organization, Time spent together, Helping and Service, Encouragement, and being others Protector, Defender, Intercessor.

As a mother, I know what is being asked of me when God says “I want you to love your fellow man the way you love your own children!”  This is no small thing; it is sacrifice, devotion, intentional daily effort, an all consuming duty.

So how do we LEAD Like a Deborah?

You should love each other (John 13:34-35)

To be a leader you must be a servant (Matthew 20:26)

Follow Jesus’ example and wash feet (John 13:14-15)

Preach the Good News and Please God not Man (I Thessalonians 2:4b)

Don’t be selfish…Be humble…Take an interest in others (Philippians 2:3-4)

Care for others with genuine emotion (Psalm 78:72)

Guard, Feed and Shepherd God’s flock (Acts 20:28)

Speak the truth in love and we will grow up in Christ (Ephesians 4:15)

Follow the example of other Leaders in their faith (Hebrews 13:7)

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good… especially to those in the family of faith (Galatians 6:9-10)

We need to willingly offer ourselves to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to love our fellowman like Deborah loved her nation.  One woman’s faith led a nation out of bondage and into 40 years of peace.

What could your mother’s heart lead others to do?
