For our final Backyard Science Club of 2013 we measured The Milky Way! Did you know that our universe is 3,665,000,000 miles long from the Sun to Pluto?
We made little paper signs to represent the sun and all the planets, even the dwarf one. We then glued them on popsicle sticks and found a large field. Using the scale of 1 inch to 1 million miles we measured out our universe.
When you set the Sun and the inner planets in the ground you can still see them fairly well. The words on the papers are legible from this shorter distance. Then you place Jupiter in the ground at 483 million miles from the Sun, even at only 483 inches you are quite a distance. By the time you place Saturn in the ground nothing is legible anymore, the papers themselves are barely visible. And we haven’t even got to the outer edge. Neptune is 1,011,000,000 miles just from Uranus!
If you want to be awe inspired you should try this exercise.
